That one summer when I didn’t go bicycle touring and that other summer years ago when I traveled on my own for the first time, meaning no parents of course.
- Tour de l’Ubaye 2011
After 15 years of trusted service my bicycle frame had cracked. And the bicycle that my girlfriend was using for touring got stolen. So we went hiking in the Alps. The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence are familiar terrain for me. I spent a few weeks there every summer on family vacation untill I turned 18. The GR 56 Tour de l’Ubaye is part of the GR-network of long-distance footpaths in Europe. The GR 56 is a 10 day hiking tour over many of the mountain passes and tops that surround the valley of the Ubaye river. No wheels involved, nevertheless one of my favorite trips. Few things can beat hiking in the mountains.
- Cévennes 2002
A blast from the past. Seven friends, freshly graduated from highschool, set off on a hiking trip through the French Cevennes region: the Tour du Cévenol. I was 18 and not ashamed of anything by the looks of that third photo. A memorable time for sure.
